First Tutorial with Bunny

After some deliberation I chose 'A Concert' by Lorenzo Costa.

We decided that this was quite an unusual painting. And not one that many people are familiar with. But what had really drawn me to the painting was the character I saw in the painting and the facial expressions. We discussed the different things that I could do to take it into a different era and that it has the potential to be a very playful styling project.

Paintings & Ideas after NG/NPG Gallery Visit

I spent a few hours walking around The National Gallery and The National Portrait Gallery on Sunday. I had the initial plan not to choose too many paintings as I would be too overwhelmed when it came down to the final decision making.

In the end I chose seven from The National Gallery and explored ways in which i think they could work over all:

Plan for NG & NPG Visit

Tomorrow I will be visiting The National Gallery and The National Portrait Gallery to try and find the painting that I will be using for my Styling Project. I am quite daunted by the idea of these galleries as they are absolutely huge! Furthermore, there is so much amazing work, and although I am extremely familiar with both; I feel as if when I get there it will be overwhelming.

I know from my initial research that I want to re-create something quite classic, and bring it forward into a modern time. Nevertheless keeping some key things the same.

With this in mind I have created a list of key things that I want to keep in mind whilst I'm there:

  • Colour - Possible colour pallets and how they will translate.
  • Character - Interesting looks, keep people in mind that I could use who I already know.
  • Costume - Important to bring into a modern context.
  • Era - How to move away from the original and make my own.

Inspirational Blog

“Composition With Red, Blue and Yellow” by Mondrian
“Composition With Red, Blue and Yellow” remake by Katie Jackson

The image above is a simple yet effective use of colour. Taking the original stimulus out of context to create something very clever. I came across this blog before Christmas, as one of my friends recomennded it telling me it was 'very me'. As soon as I heard the brief for 'Painting for Inspiration' I immeadiatly thought of this competition and it has become a great starting point for inspiration for the project.

I found the use of colour and character extremely effective in this remake. And I love the fact that he looks modern in the remake, even though it is almost perfect costume. I think this is something I want to carry through to my styling project.

Project Brief

During this unit you will develop your creative and practical skills in film design and styling. The project is divided into 2 parts but each part is integral and supports and develops your skills.

Part 1 - Styling
You are to visit the National Gallery or National Portrait Gallery in the first week of the project and select and painting which you would like to interpret. The painting can be from any period and can have just one character in or a number of characters.

Once you have selected a painting you should decided whether you would like to interpret the painting in the period portrayed whether you would like to place it in a contemporary context.

The outcome of the Part 1 should be presented in a photograph (taken by you or by a photography student if you can arrange it yourself). The project has £0 budget so you will have to be resourceful and inventive in your creations. You will have access to the costumes in the costume store and can contribute a small amount of your own money if you wish to purchase items from charity shops etc.  The skill in creating this piece will be in the styling of the costume ready for camera.

Part 2 – Designing for Film
You will work closely with a film crew from the BA (Hons) Film course to costume a film inspired from a painting from the Courtauld Gallery. Students from the film course will chose a painting and pitch their ideas to the tutors. 8 ideas will be chosen and you will be assigned a film each to design and source costumes for. The actors in the films are students on the BA (Hons) Acting course.

The turn around for the project is very tight and forces you to be creative with time management and work to a tight budget. ALL costs come from this very small budget so try and use our store as much as possible and try and negotiate something with your producer.

Designs for Battle of the Winds

Battle for the Winds;  the last project that I worked on was a fantastic experience.  It is part of the Cultural Olympiad; http://vimeo.com/34603787 I feel extremely privileged to have worked on such a project. From that experience I have learnt that I need to organise my sketchbooks, so that they make sense not only to myself but to others academically. Furthermore maybe to separate different bits of my work into different sketchbooks. Furthermore, research is the key and I need to do a lot more of it! I feel that feedback from this project will really help me move forward to SDP, and hopefully help me create a strong body of work.

Here are two of my designs from the project; Aeolis and Doldrum, so that you can get an idea of my designing style.
